Making the Right Decision
Now that the college acceptance letters have been received, it’s time to start considering which colleges offer the best matches for a truly desirable post-secondary school experience. It is a myth to weigh the college acceptances based solely on college rankings and reputations. The best ranked and most competitive colleges are not necessarily the best matches for all students.
In deciding on which colleges offer the best educational opportunities, it is important to do the proper amount of research to see which colleges fit your individual and personal criteria for attending. Begin by examining the physical factors by determining which areas of the country you prefer to live; is an urban campus preferable to a rural or suburban campus; how far away from home do you wish to be; and does climate or culture play an important role in your quality of life?
Next, determine the best suitable housing arrangements and if you plan to commute from home, live on campus, or reside in a co-ed or single sex dorm? Will you require on campus housing for all
four years or do you have a strong desire to live off-campus? What is the sense of community you seek in a college setting – is it cozy, anonymous or in-between? Do you want a school that has a strong Greek system with several sororities and fraternities to choose from or are sports, clubs and school spirit important? How much academic structure do you need to succeed and will academic guidance, career counseling, and tutoring services be a factor in your academic success rate.
Finally, the average college student changes majors at least twice in the course of his or her college career. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that the college you accept has a number of strong departments in multiple areas in which you are interested in pursing. Upon establishing your individual criteria and identifying needs for a college experience, you will be able to make the right choice and find the best match among your acceptances.
